Sound Insulation

Acoustic underlay is the sound barrier or noise barrier between floor and ceiling. It can reduce noises from floor through ceiling effectively. Therefore, complaints from downstair neighbours will be avoided with acoustic underlay installed. 

Usually, 3mm underlayment can reduce noise by 15db to 18db. This 3mm underlay is usually used for houses or condos or offices.

5mm underlayment reduces noises by 18db to 25db. It is also oftened used for houses or condos and offices. Sometimes, hotels also use 5mm underlay.

10mm underlay will reduce noise by 25db to 27db. It is frequently installed in star hotel guest rooms and equipment rooms.

Self Leveling

Not only can the underlayment act as soundproof underlay, it also can level the subfloor. In this case, the bumps in subfloor should be no more than 3mm high. And it's better to use underlayment thicker than 5mm for self leveling function.
